Back in the good 'ole days when oysters were plentyful, private ownership of oysterbeds dictated a "guard" shack be manned to prevent theives from stealing the tasty critters. The state of Virginia to this day allows such properties to continue to be used, even though there isn't an oyster in a hundred miles. Used for hunting now, there are many guard shacks still in use, but none as nice as the Purnell house on Pope Island, just south of the Maryland line. Love to spend a week there sometime chillin!
