One of my favorite trees on Assateague is located on the west side of the island, I've never seen it with leaves! Please enjoy this comment from one of Dr Townsends daughters, Tina:
Tina Townsend Smyth Your favorite tree on the island is also mine. Susan and John and I used to love to climb it. How I miss those days. The pictures are beautiful. We spent every October "teacher's holiday" at the "Gunning Club" as we called it. Breakfast tasted better there then anywhere else. John, Susan and I would go out and be gone all day.. exploring, crabbing, playing on the dock and in a little boat in the water, mud mucking, (we particularly were in the mud and muck on either side of the road) lots of mud critters to find, crabbing and wondering around the "pawnd" as Dad pronounced it. The image of the lovely lane that led to it...So much wildlife, so much freedom, so much joy.. it was magic.
